Antique Victorian Period Engraved Silver Fern Leaf Locket

$157.00
A very beautiful late Victorian Aesthetic period locket! This locket features very delicately hand engraved ferns, and was very likely created during the Pteridomania or "fern fever" period of the Victorian era (at its height from the 1870s to 1890s). During this time, ferns became incredibly popular, both to grow, collect as specimens, and as the centerpiece in decorative motifs. Many pieces of jewelry featuring ferns were made during this period.

The locket measures 2.8 x 3.5 cm (including the bail), and although it is unmarked, it tests as solid sterling silver. It's in lovely antique condition, with only very minor abrasions to the silver on the back. The front of the locket is virtually perfect, and there are some scratches in the interior. One of the original silver rings for keeping photos is still there. The locket weighs 9.26 grams.
